Saying Farewell

I remember when I first started TCS... it all came from wanting to have a blog about books - Christian books! And one of the first decisions that I had made was picking out the proper title. I thought of all kinds of names that were available to choose from. But, in the end, The Christian Scroll sounded the "coolest." My reason for picking it - had a medieval tone. Whatever that means! *Lol*

After a while, the focus on the theme changed. It became an adventurous type of style. There's a compass, leaves, and a quote on the banner that depict this. I was actually thinking of "Indiana Jones" while designing, but whether that was obvious or not, I really don't know. *shrugs* What I do hope is... TCS has been an adventure for you all - an AWESOME adventure! It has very much been so for me. I did a lot of exploring in the blog world and found many wonderful gems. All the friendly authors, publishers, and bookworms were the sparkling gems that I found. I don't plan on losing them, because I will still be around hacking my way through the jungles of the internet.

There are no more book reviews, interviews, or giveaways to do for TCS. This really is the last post. I am saying farewell to the faithful readers who've enjoyed my blog. But! It doesn't quite end here, because I may not completely stop from blogging. My real passions are: photography, designing, and our furry friends. Yes, that would be animals. Keep an eye or... two out, because "something" might just pop up out of the blue!

The Sword of Light: Book Review

When I opened this book, I was introduced immediately to the main character. I found what his strengths and weaknesses were. Shayia is a young man who is eager to learn all he can about being a warrior. He’s swift with the sword and strong in his agility. Although these are useful, it is not the most important weapon in his arsenal.

Shayia’s grandfather and mentor, Ennus, shows him that his true strength comes from God. He cannot lean on his own abilities as a good swordsman to save him in battle. As part of his lessons, Shayia must read from the Sacred Book. But he only wishes to practice fighting and finds it difficult to study. Knowing he will need it most of all, Ennus has Shayia continue on with them.

For darkness will soon descend on the valley...

I love fantasy! In fact, it’s probably my favorite genre. I received the opportunity to read this book from the author, Kimberli Campbell. I realize that I’m an adult, but I could not help liking this.

I would describe The Sword of Light as fantasy/allegorical/adventure. The allegorical message is that we must rely on God for our strength. Life can be a big and scary place out there and we have to be prepared for whatever comes our way. I believe that there are spiritual battles going on in all of our lives and we must wield the Word of God like a sword. Not in a violent way, of course! *Lol*

I really can’t say anything bad about this book. The characters are amusing, the story literally clings to you, and after you’ve read it, you’re dying to pick up the next one in the series.

I highly recommend The Sword of Light to tweens who adore fantasy. Just to point out some things to parents - there is sorcery, fight scenes, and scary creatures. I would say that if your tween likes The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings, then they should have no problems with this.

Sara's Journey: Book Review

In the small town of Summerville, the residents are friendly and pleasant. They all appear to be ordinary people with seemingly ordinary lives. But they all share a common goal - to help a young woman by the name of Sara. Because of an accident that happened not long ago, Sara was left with most of her body burned. Feeling ashamed, she had locked herself away from the rest of the world. She wouldn’t allow anyone into her crumbling home aside from her doctor. Because of the doctor’s regular check-ups, he was the only one who had ever seen her burns.

Summerville gets turned upside down, when a complete stranger walks in. All who meet the stranger think he’s kind and trustworthy. And his reason for visiting Summerville is this: “I have walked for days to come to your town because God put a calling in my heart to come here.” A family lets him take up residence with them and he soon becomes like a brother. They don’t learn much from him, except for his name is Turner and that he’s a Christian. Turner does seem different somehow…. He’s always looking after everyone’s needs. Does this mean that he will be able to help Sara?

Sara’s Journey is a sweet yet simple book. The message from the story is awesome. It’s actually about a couple of things - being able to forgive someone when you think they’ve harmed you and realizing that perfection is not what God seeks. When we hide ourselves from the world, we’re not able to shine. It’s like covering up a candle in the darkness.

The story often switches to separate parts for the different characters. Since it takes place in a town, many residents are mentioned throughout the pages. It was confusing trying to figure out who was who. Before I end this review, I just want to mention one more thing. There’s not much romance, so don’t read it for that. It’s inspirational with perhaps a pinch of allegory.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Kimberli Campbell

Kimberli Renee Campbell is the author of a Christian fantasy series by the name of Shayia's Adventures (recommended for tweens). The Sword Of Light is her first book in this series, and expect the second to release sometime in 2012. Kimberli lives in Nebraska with her husband and two children.

Welcome, Kimberli!

When did you first show an interest in becoming a writer?

I tried to calculate it in my head, but started to get a headache. :) So, I'll say around eleven years ago. I was working as a file clerk and writing my ideas on scratch paper and napkins.

How did you become an author? What were the steps you took to achieve it?

My husband and his family are blessed with many talents. The Lord called my husband's older brother, Dale, to start a production company. Dale and his partner's goal was (is) to create videos, music, and books that would bring glory to God. Dale knew I was working on a children's book series and asked for the manuscript of the first book. After reading it, they wanted to publish it. It has truly been a blessing.

What motivated you to write The Sword of Light? Did the inspiration for it come to you right away or take its time?

Like many authors, it came to me in a dream. It played in my head like a movie from start to finish. It was great. I continued to have the same dream night after night until I had the outline down on paper.

I really liked reading your book. It’s fantasy with a taste of allegory. The characters in it were just… fun. I’m dying to know which of them is your favorite and why?

I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I love each of them for their strengths and weaknesses. However, the main character, Shayia, is much like my oldest son, so he tugs at my heart a little more than the others.

What feeling do you hope your young readers will have after reading The Sword of Light?

I want them to be feel as if there is nothing too big for them to handle with God, family, and friends by their side. I also want them to feel as if they were just on an amazing adventure.

In Shayia’s Adventures, will there be a book two? Kimberli, would you mind sharing a little of what you’re working on with us?

Yes, there will be a book two. We are praying for an early summer release. It is called Redemption. Young readers can expect a lot more fun and adventure.

As for what I'm working on...book three. The Lord has not given me a title yet.

There are many great Bible verses and quotes out there, but which of these apply to your journey in life?

Hm...probably the main verse for the book. Philippians 4:13. My family has faced many trials in the past few years. But, through it all, we are able to move forward because we were not alone. Our strength came from the Lord and we give Him all the glory.

Randomly Fun Questions:

What is one unique fact about you that most people don’t know?

I have a nickname for all children, including my own - George. When my father could not remember someone's name, he called them Pete. So, I believe I got that habit from him. :)

When you’re not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

My husband and I have two wonderful boys (ages 17 and 5). Our little one is constantly on the move as he should be for his age. So when I am alone, I like to sit quietly or sleep.

Do you have any favorite quirky words?

Sorry, I don't have a favorite quirky word. However I did make up a word when I was younger. Redisecity - it has many meanings. I used it when I wanted to seem like I was saying something grown-up.

Welcome, Patti!

How did you get started as an author? Did any of your family or friends influence you in the art of writing?

I actually struggled in school. I could not read or write until I was 14. I suffer from dyslexia. It was my English teacher Mrs. Connie Esteves, my parents, and grandparents who helped me overcome this. I discovered my passion for writing when Mrs. Esteves encouraged me to write a short story for the school newspaper, I did and never stopped writing. Lol!

What do you love most about writing?

Honestly, that I can encourage other people who might feel less then perfect, who might be struggling with a learning disability, a hardship or a dark period in life. I love that I have a platform to tell the world about God in an amazing way. I feel blessed beyond measure!

What was it like when you got your book (Sara’s Journey) published? Did you feel excited, nervous, or a mix of both?

Oh wow, I felt thankful. I felt like I wanted to shout for joy. I mean if God could use someone like me to be an example of his love on earth, how could I feel anything less then joy? To be truthful I did feel a little nervous too, I mean being an ambassador for Christ is a big responsibility, I don't take it lightly.

I like the main character in Sara’s Journey. She suffered a lot but she chose to overcome it with the help of God. How did you develop her personality? Is she your favorite out of the others created in the book?

My main character is based on me. I was never in a fire, and I never had to hide from the world. I do however know the feeling of having to hide under a veil. For years I felt that I had to hide the real me, for fear if people found out I was learning disabled they would not accept me. Like Sara, I felt like God could not love me until I was perfect. It was while I was actually writing Sara's Journey that I came to understand God doesn't use perfect people to share his message, he uses the ones who accept his perfect love and have a perfect faith in him to share his message. Like Sara I learned that the only way to become whole is to be broken, and that you stand at your tallest when you are on your knees.

Are you currently working on a book? If so, would you be willing to reveal a tiny snippet from the story?

Yes, I am. For those of you who don't know I have lost in my lifetime 14 family members to cancer, my dad being one of them. I have been donating a portion of my profit of my book to cancer research. The next book I pray will get published is a devotional for cancer patients and caregivers. In the book, I used experiences that my family have gone through, lessons I have learned, scripture and songs. I intend to give a large portion of the profit to the Dana Farber cancer institute in Massachusetts. This was the hospital my friend was helped by when she was going through her battle.

There are many great Bible verses and quotes out there, but which of these apply to your journey in life?

Corinthians 2;13, Faith, Hope and Love and the greatest of these is love.

Patti, have any closing thoughts, writing tips, or advice to share with us?

I just want the world to know how much I love God. Everything I write Is a love song to him. I also just want to share with my fellow writers never give up! If you get a million rejection letters from publishers, know that God has a plan. If God lay it upon your heart to write it, then there is someone out in the world that needs to hear the message. Never stop shining your light into the world, For there is someone that might need your light to find their way home.

Randomly Fun Questions:

What were your favorite books to read while growing up? I loved the velveteen rabbit, anything written by Dr Seuss, Judy Bloom, and as a teenager I loved just to read the greatest book ever written MY bible.

Do you like cake or pie better? Which kind? Oh, That's a awesome question. by far pie. My favorite is apple.

If you could choose any country to visit right now, which one would it be and why?

Japan, by far. I admire and respect and love all my brothers and sisters there, I just want to throw my arms around them and tell them God is with them. I wish I could be there to help in the recovery/rebuilding efforts. I have to ask whoever reads this blog to please reach deep into their pockets and donate. Our brothers and sisters need us!

Letters to God on a Prodigal Son by Anita Estes

Letters to God on a Prodigal Son consists of letters that were written by author Anita Estes. She dated each segment, and they are similar to journal entries. The author added something incredibly helpful with almost all of the chapters. There are areas in the book called Lessons Learned and Suggestions. Anita shows what she learned in that situation and offers advice on it.

Writing with the pain that only a mother could express, Anita shares with us the story of her son. Starting at the beginning, the author didn’t realize how serious her son’s addiction to drugs and alcohol was. Being a mother, she wanted to protect and shelter him. But she realized that this was not the best way for him to change. With a lot of tough love, she worked hard on him. Taking him to church and counseling are two of the ways she did this. She also never gave up praying or hoping that her son would come back to them. And the only true way for her son to recover was to give him completely over to God.

I like reading about people’s lives to see if I can glean something from them. And I did from this. It’s to never give up on someone. To keep praying for them even if it feels like it’s doing nothing. God always hears your prayers.

Blogoversary Celebration Giveaway!

It's here. It's finally here! Our first year blogoversary! Today marks the first day of our week-long celebration. We'll kick it off with a special giveaway for you all. Essentials of the Heart by Susan Weagant

When I picked up Essentials of the Heart, the first thing that I noticed was the front cover of the book. It’s simple but sweet with the two red hearts strewn across it. Holding it in my hands, it’s not the biggest. This isn’t a problem because it’s perfect for carrying it with you. What I really like about this book are the areas where you can write out your reflections after every chapter (there are thirteen chapters). If you enjoy expressing your feelings or thoughts on paper, like I do, then you’ll find that corner absolutely essential.

Essentials of the Heart is divided up into two parts: decisions and disciplines. The author (Susan Weagant) draws from her life and shares bits and pieces of her journey with us. All the chapters seem to have specific verses from God’s Word that pertain to a certain subject. I love it! Christians should go to the Bible for their answers and put them side to side with what they’re learning.

Reflecting on what I read, I know that I have an even stronger longing to develop a closer relationship with God. Seeing what Susan does in her ministry with women is awesome. She has a heart to serve. Putting God first and others second should be what we do everyday. I really admire Susan for reaching out to women and encouraging them to pursue an intimate bond with God. In a study, it states that most Christians are known as being casual with their faith. I don’t know about you, but I want to be captive with mine. This is just one of the interesting points in Essentials of the Heart.

I recommend this guide-like book to women who seek the essentials to a closer walk with Him. I can imagine taking it with you to a quiet and cozy spot while reading Essentials of the Heart. While reading, it should make some kind of impact on you.

Alone and afraid, Mindy McLaurin enters a women’s penitentiary for embezzlement charges. She says that she’s not guilty. She suspects that a co-worker has pinned the embezzlement on her. While in prison, she’s also on a separate mission to find information within the walls. Mindy has two dilemmas: she must both clear her charges and snoop for a private investigator – who just happens to be her boyfriend.

Mindy starts her investigation by digging up any info on what happened to a young woman named Alexis. Fearing foul play, the mother of the young woman hired Mindy’s boyfriend, Mitch, to investigate the death. Mitch saw Mindy’s going behind bars as an opportune time. He hired - or rather used - her to look into the situation. But Mindy soon realizes that Mitch is hardly the guy for her, because he’s in no hurry to bail her out.

In captivity Mindy meets with many challenges. She creates enemies and friends inside the cold exterior of the prison. Not all is bad; she meets a handsome counselor and an unexpected individual. Through it all and in desperation, Mindy clings to God when being faced by deadly threats. Will she ever get out of prison alive and find who killed Alexis?

If I could sum up one word to describe Killing Time, I would say that it’s unique. Here’s the reason: the setting is located in a prison. K. Dawn Byrd really captures the hustle and bustle of the women’s penitentiary. It’s not pretty, nor is it pleasant. The inmates that meet the main character are mean and unfriendly towards her. The author realistically portrayed what it would be like to be stuck in such an inhospitable position.

I loved the areas of the book where Mindy clings to God because she feels so alone. If we were in her shoes, what would we do? Would we rely on God or ourselves to make things happen? Because the main character meets such hardened people, there’s some crudeness – but that’s expected. Watch out for the suspense, because it’s killer!

I liked what K. Dawn Byrd tackled in writing Killing Time, and I would definitely read more from her. I recommend it to women who like a mix of suspense, mystery, and romance.

Evelyn Puerto is the author of Beyond The Rapids. She was a missionary to Russia, Ukraine, Africa, Asia, and Europe. She resides in St. Louis, Missouri with her husband, three stepdaughters, two step-grandsons, and a cat.

Welcome, Evelyn!

On your site, it mentions that you were a missionary to Russia for seven years. What was that experience like?

Being a missionary is exciting, challenging, lonely, and humbling. I went with my plans for how I would serve God and the Russian people. What I didn’t expect was how many Russians would serve me and teach me and bless me with their friendship and deep faith. God changed me and used me in ways I didn’t expect, using, for example to make tortillas from scratch as a way to build relationships with people who ordinarily wouldn’t attend church.

Evelyn, I loved your book! The true story of the Brynza family is amazing, and I have to ask… what made you write Beyond The Rapids?

Thank you so much! During my missionary years, I traveled to Ukraine several times to join short term teams from my home church. Many people who went on these trips heard the Brynzas’ stories and were amazed and inspired by them. When I returned home, I was asked to write their story so that others could also be encouraged that God is still at work, even when it doesn’t seem like He is.

The events and information presented in the book are meshed together perfectly. How did you collect and assemble it all so well?

I’m not sure if I should say trial and error or the hand of God. Both are true. I went through several drafts, trying different formats, brainstorming with someone who was coaching me through the process. A major challenge was deciding what to include from the material I had gathered through interviews with the Brynza family, extensive reading about the Soviet Union, and my own knowledge of the culture. After about two years, God gave me an idea as I was praying about the book. I soon had note cards in rows and piles all over my living room floor, but once they were organized, I had the basic flow and structure of the book set.

Are there plans for more books farther down the road? If there are, would you mind sharing any details on them?

I don’t have immediate plans for other books, but I am toying with a few ideas. In the meantime, I am writing a series of devotionals based on Beyond the Rapids, and am posting them on my website.

What do you hope someone will be affected by the most from reading Beyond The Rapids?

When I wrote it, I was hoping that believers would be inspired to take our calling to study and apply the Word of God more seriously, to have closer relationships with God. What I am learning that many unbelievers have been challenged to reconsider their beliefs and many Christians say their faith has been strengthened.

Can you recommend websites for anyone that would be interested in helping those who are being persecuted?

Two in particular come to mind: International Christian Concern’s www.persecution.org and The Voice of the Martyrs at www.persecution.com.

There are many great Bible verses and quotes out there, but which of these apply to your journey in life?

Because I struggle so much with it, Romans 12:1 sums up my journey well. I have had to learn to live with what God gives and what He chooses to withhold, and to live in a way that is pleasing to Him, and not to me. Along similar lines, I often consider the quotation “preach the gospel always, and if necessary, use words.” I think I am indebted to St Francis of Assisi for that reminder that if I do not show the love of Christ in how I treat people, my words may not bear much fruit.

What are you currently reading?

A few days ago I finished Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky and now am in the middle of False Impressions by Jeffrey Archer and What Good is God? by Philip Yancey.

Do you prefer tea or coffee?

Definitely tea. It brings back fond memories of my years in Russia where drinking tea and eating chocolates is a major social activity.

How do you start your day off each morning?

I feed my cat, make my husband’s lunch and see him off, and have my time with the Lord, not always in that order. (Well, the cat is usually first because she’s the one whining.)

Beyond The Rapids: Book Review

Beyond The Rapids by Evelyn Puerto

In Beyond The Rapids, we’re transported to the country of Ukraine during the Soviet Union. There we meet a modest and remarkable Christian family. The book opens with a brief foreword and is followed closely by an introduction and acknowledgments. The chapters switch from various members of the Brynza family on whom the story chronicles. The first fifteen chapters are told by, Lena, the youngest of the four children. Lena’s experiences are of growing up and on the tribulations they all faced, especially those of her father.

From there, we switch over to the lives of Lena’s two older brothers: Yakov and Viktor. Being bullied and taunted by communists, they both faced the overwhelming temptation to fit in with the people. Being labeled as a Baptist on practically everything made “fitting in” impossible. They weren’t made or meant to simply fit in with the world. God had other plans for them; they would shine for everyone to see.

The last chapters swap back and forth between Lena, Igor (her husband), Veniamin (her youngest brother), and Ruslana (Veniamin’s wife). It was confusing at times when it switched, but that was only because I wasn’t always paying attention. I flipped through the pages rather quickly.

There are no boring areas in any corner of the book. It’s all fascinating! While reading, you will probably find the family’s ways unusual and somewhat strict. In turn, they had visited America and thought us to live in a lukewarm way of life.

I really wish I could’ve met Lena’s father, Alexei Brynza, but reading this book made me feel like I did. I love true stories, and I can say that Beyond The Rapids is one of the best out there. I haven’t read anything this good in a while. It truly inspired and challenged my faith. I highly recommend Beyond The Rapids, but not for anyone too young, though. From Zero to Christian in Just 35 Years by Lori A. Moore

From Zero to Christian in Just 35 Years is a relatively small book. In all, there are precisely 96 pages. It’s a biography on the author Lori A Moore. You might think the limited amount of pages would be inefficient for a biography, but Lori managed to successfully pack her 35 years into four chapters. It fits.

I found it fascinating to follow Lori as she fought and struggled to find her calling. Her heart longed to be satisfied, but she would usually find it in all the wrong places. Her family broke apart when she was young and she was often left alone.

She believed maybe there was a God but she didn’t personally know Him. A Christian couple would invite her to church and she often accepted. A neighbor asked her to attend a women’s event and she couldn’t say no. She heard Liz Curtis Higgs speak and was touched by her testimony. Here’s a quote mentioning it: “She explained that she used to live in that pit too and that it was through God’s amazing grace that she was able to break the bondage of that pit.” Soon after that event, Lori accepted Jesus into her life. She escaped the pit that had held her down.

I think Lori’s life is an example of how God can reach anyone and direct their hearts to Him. He can save you from that pit you’re trapped in.

His Other Wife: Book Review

His Other Wife: A Novel by Deborah Bedford

In the opening prologue, Hilary appears to have a perfect life with a handsome husband, a son, and the job of a nurse. In shocking reality, Hilary’s life is far from perfect. Her husband, Erik, reveals he’s had an affair with another woman and he wants a divorce. Hilary is shocked and outraged at the news. Everything is not what it seemed to be.

In the first chapter, it’s six years later. Hilary struggles to be both a single mother and a nurse. She has built up a tough exterior over what happened between her and Eric, but inwardly she can still feel the pain. But she’s not alone in all this; she has God to comfort her, great friends to laugh with, and a son to take of.

Hilary’s son, Seth, is almost a grown man. He’ll soon be leaving high school forever and heading to college. Because of her son’s graduation, Hilary will have no choice but to see Eric and his other wife.

His Other Wife has a theme of forgiveness intertwined into the story. The main character’s pain felt so real that I was suffering right along with her. I knew from the synopsis of the book that her husband gets a divorce, but I was still left stunned when it happened. All of the characters react in a perfectly human-like way through suffering, tragedy, and hope.

It’s not the easiest to muscle through because of the heaviness of it. After the awful circumstances that Hilary and her family had encountered, it was like there was a big dark cloud hanging over the whole story. The end leaves on a happier note, so I was satisfied. In the author’s notes, Bedford says that the story was inspired by Hannah from the Bible.

I can tell Deborah Bedford likes to write stories on real life situations. I like her honesty, and she definitely chose a difficult issue to approach. I would be willing to pick up another book from this author.

I recently read and reviewed your book How Shall We Feed Them? It’s really handy on starting a food pantry. How did you compile all the information together? Was it quite a process?

I am so thankful that God is my friend. Good record keeping along with God by my side, enabled me to remember what took place in early 2005 when we began Cupboards for Christ ministry. The beginning of 2008, when I stepped down as food pantry coordinator, God ask that I begin writing on how He had directed me to organize the food pantry. I do believe God's timing for this was important because it was still very fresh in my mind. Basic book information was completed by fall of 2008 and was turned into the publisher by summer of 2009. The book was released by Winepress books in February 2010.

I like that you added a stop and pray section with each chapter. Seeking God before making a decision has to be the most important key presented in the book. When and how did you know God was leading you into this ministry?

As a young adult I began giving in secret to those in need. Periodically God would ask me to purchase food for a family or a college student or place money anonymously in an envelope to give to someone. As a result of wanting to serve Him and hear His voice, God ask me to take the next step and organize the food pantry at the church I had been attending for over twelve years. The end of 2004 I answered the call and the beginning of 2005 Cupboards for Christ was formed.

In today’s economy, it’s hard for some families to make it through financially. What are the beginning steps for finding and meeting their needs?

Listening to the Holy Spirit is key. Times are hard and families are having to make tough choices. If you or I pray that our ears are open to hear the Holy Spirit, God will bring people into our path that are in need. When the Holy Spirit points out a need that needs to be met, ask Him how He would like for you to meet that need and put it into action.

What is the most rewarding part about running a food pantry?

I have found that the most rewarding part of a food pantry ministry for me is meeting and praying with the food recipients who come by for food. God brings people to our church doors wanting their physical needs to be met but little do they realize that God wants to meet their spiritual needs as well. Helping others lift their eyes up to the Lord giving thanks and praying for their concerns allows them to see that God loves them and cares about every need they have.

Is there any advice you have for people who are interested in opening a food pantry at their church or organization?

1. Seek the Lord first and ask that He take the lead in this ministry.
2. Choose godly volunteers to assist and work as a team.
3. Choose your food storage space wisely.
4. Food pantry guidelines need to be in place before you open your food pantry doors.
5. Be open to the Holy Spirit - His ways, His thoughts and ideas.

Do you plan on writing another book? If so, could you give us any insight into what that next one would be about?

Yes, I am currently writing a food pantry devotional book as an encouragement to those who volunteer in the food pantry minsitry.

There are many great Bible verses and quotes out there, but which of these apply to your journey in life?

Ephesians 6:7 "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord and not men." I try to apply this verse when I am writing a devotional, serving my husband as his caretaker, taking care of my grandchildren, or when I am serving as a volunteer in the food pantry ministry.

When you’re not busy, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Bake, Hike, walk, ride my bike, write, spend time with my grandchildren, family and friends, watch movies, read and study God's word

Spring is almost upon us! What is your favorite characteristic of this season?

I love the colors of Spring. Watching trees and the flowers bloom is such a miracle that takes place right before your eyes.

We all seem to have collections of one item or another. Is there anything that you like to collect?

Cookbooks - I love to bake and try new recipes.

The Mystery of Ghost Dancer Ranch by Patrick E. Craig

The Mystery of Ghost Dancer Ranch follows two curious teenagers, Punkin and Boo, on their very first adventure together. They have both been left to spend the summer at their grandparents’ ranch. Thinking it will be boring, the girls are not at all enthused with being separated from friends and family. Little do they know, it will become anything but boring!

The real mystery begins when Boo’s curiosity is sparked from asking her grandma questions. She learns of some intriguing history surrounding the old house. A relative was said to have hidden an Indian by the name of Red Bull and his family from the army. This relative fell in love with Red Bull’s daughter and later married her.

Boo also discovers that the name of the ranch was derived from Indians who danced on the property. This ghost dance was used to call up their dead ancestors.

The Mystery of Ghost Dancer Ranch has a style like Nancy Drew, except there are big differences. The biggest is that it focuses on the supernatural. I don’t know if you can combine the paranormal with sleuthing in a way that perfectly fits.

To break down the book, there are dangerous situations that the kids and grandfather encounter. The two main characters are adorable, and the author did well in portraying them. Crooks with an interest in casinos are mentioned, and the paranormal side of it has demons that haunt the house. Because of the demons and bad guys, it might be scary for some children.

I believe that The Lost Coast and The Hidden Gate complete the rest of this series. I don’t recommend this one for really young readers, so the appropriate age is probably for 10 and up.

The Case of the Missing Mountain is a fun and engaging way for children to learn Creation Science. The name of the book’s title refers to the events of Mount St. Helens. The pages follow two mystery rangers, Jen and Jack, as they find clues to unravel the mystery of what happened to the mountain.

Your child goes along on this activity-filled journey to pick up facts and solve puzzles. Here’s a list of the activities: crossword puzzles, unscrambling words, code breakers, science experiments, eye spy, mazes, and so much more. There are many photographs and creative designs nestled within the pages. After your child has completed everything, they will find volcano facts, Bible verses, jokes, and more at the end of the book. Kim is the perfect author for this, since she has a wealth of information on parks. I recommend The Case of the Missing Mountain for families who homeschool their children and teach Creationism. I was homeschooled, and I would’ve enjoyed something like this to pour through. It could be applied with learning geology, America’s parks, and nature.

Since I don’t have any children of my own, I plan on giving this copy to my nieces – who are homeschooled. I think they’ll both like it. My oldest niece wants to be a park ranger so this will be great for her.

Welcome, Grace!

You’re from New Zealand! This is where Lord of the Rings was filmed, right? What is it like to live on such a picturesque island?

I love it! In fact New Zealand is made up of hundreds of islands, many very small, and most people live on the two biggest ones. Looking out from my desk I can see five of them: two are volcanoes, another is quite well inhabited and serves as a city suburb with a fast ferry connection, and the rest are isolated forest and farmland. I find the water very inspiring so I am blessed to have it so close.

When and how did you know that writing was for you? Did it arrive in a flash or was it slow in coming?

I suppose it always was, in a way. As a homeschool kid aged nine, I was given a prompt and asked to write a short story. I got rather carried away and proceeded to create a whole series of unlikely adventures off that one prompt “Zebra” which I somehow contrived to twist into a science fiction tale. Yup - science fiction even then.

You run an independent publishing company by the name of Splashdown Books. Can you tell us how that got started?

Dabbling in self-publishing years ago provided the means to learn all about the technical side of publishing. And there is a lot to learn! Once I knew how it worked, I decided to put that knowledge to work for others also, connecting avid readers with stories they’d never get to see otherwise.

Your newest book, Legendary Space Pilgrims, has an allegorical and sci-fi flavor. It reminds me of Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. Did this book have a play in the inspiration for it? Is that why it’s an allegory?

Actually that aspect came up later in the writing of it. The original inspiration was a vivid dream which covered Part 1 of the book up to their escape from the first planet. After that was when the idea arose to make it a pilgrimage through seven planets that echo the seven days of creation.

What was the hardest thing about writing Legendary Space Pilgrims?

There were times when the process of writing had become so arduous and torturous that each word was like blood from a stone. Yet, in an attempt to prove the “bum-glue” theory, I forced onwards. It wasn’t pretty, at least in my mind. I don’t think the story was particularly stuck at those points, but I was dealing with the discipline required to write something of this length in one year—something I’d never done before. My first book was a good deal shorter AND it took seven years to write.

You are currently working on Independence Monday – which continues the story from the first one. Could you reveal a snippet of it with our readers?

Can we skip this question? :P I actually haven’t started it, due to other projects—starting a third series, and continuing my first, which are both unrelated to this story.

Have any tips to share that are always helpful for you in writing?

Keep it fun! If you get stuck, change something and go a different direction, focus on a different character for a while. I did finish Pilgrims under pressure—from myself, mind you—and I don’t think I’d do it that way again. It doesn’t make much difference to the end result, but you have to love writing to do it—the point of the journey is to be enjoyable.

Randomly Fun Questions:

Many fictional characters in books leave an impression on us. Which of these stand out to you and why?

My favourite would have to be Stephen Lawhead’s Taliesin in the book of the same name, a fairytale prince of the ancient Welsh who could sing a miracle into existence. Then there’s Frank Creed’s Calamity Kid in Flashpoint - a height-challenged hard-nosed cyberspiritual warrior, just plain too cool.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? Oh, night owl, all the way. I feel much better staying up half the night to finish a project than trying to get up and do it early.

Let’s talk trekkie to trekkie. Favorite Star Trek (The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise), character, and episode?

As a series I have to say Voyager, because I appreciate the character arcs that were so strongly developed over the whole series. My favourite characters are Guinan and Captain Janeway. Episode? That’s tough. I really like the Voyager two-parter “Scorpion”, pretty much any of the time travel ones, and movies number 5 and 8 along with the 2009 rehash which was awesome. Oh, it’s all good...

On the Shores of Scotland: Book Review

Angel Harp: A Novel by Michael Phillips

Strumming notes with a melancholy tone on her harp, Marie Buchan feels remarkably the same. She wishes to start afresh; her husband had always planned on visiting Scotland with her. Unfortunately, they never had the chance to pursue it. Ever since his death, Marie has lived the years in a stand-still. Teaching her passion of the harp to eager students even lacks its luster. A sudden thought hits her… to be spontaneous might just be the ingredient to awaken her life. So, with that in mind, Marie makes arrangements to travel. She’s ready to live her dream.

Marie arrives in Scotland with a mix of optimism and apprehension. She doesn’t want to stick out like a tourist but blend in with the people. She’s soon drawn to the countryside and chooses to reside in a quaint village. At first, Marie feels like a stranger but is later welcomed by the friendly town-folk. Exploring the surroundings of the little village, Marie discovers an enchanting ledge overlooking the sea. Fortunately for her, there’s a bench and it’s the perfect setting to play her harp. She belongs here on the shores of Scotland – cloaked by mystery and old traditions.

My Thoughts on Angel Harp:

I was really drawn into the first couple of chapters up until I hit an abrupt wall of ideologies. The characters/author felt like they were rambling in areas. I didn’t find it alluring. I won’t go into specifics, but there’s an idea that didn’t quite match up with scripture.

The scenery is described wonderfully by Michael Phillips. I found myself being transported to the majestic lands of Scotland. The rich culture of the Scottish made me add it to my list of countries to visit. While learning the history of Scotland is necessary to the story, it was excessive and heavy. At times, it seemed like the author was only writing the book for that reason alone. While I had devoured the beginning of Angel Harp, the story later slowed me down. Not the easiest to read.

Michael Phillips’ writing is good. It’s steady and pretty flawless. I’m just amazed that he could write so well from the viewpoint of a woman. I applaud him! I recommend Angel Harp to bookworms who love first person narratives and the history of Scotland. This book stuck to me, and I have no inkling as to why… It will make a nice addition to my library, because of its cover. How many hardcover books are white?

How Shall We Feed Them?: A Practical Guide for Organizing a Food Pantry by Marty Girardier 4 stars

If you’re thinking of starting a food pantry at your church or organization, How Shall We Feed Them? by Marty Girardier is the book for you. It’s a guide that shows the step by step process of buying, storing, and giving food away. Marty opens with a short introduction on the need to feed the hungry. I love that she says, “The most important key is to pray and seek God…”

There are only seven chapters squeezed into this skinny book, but they’re very informative and helpful. Each one starts with a Bible verse and ends with a note from people who’ve benefited from the food pantry. Included in the middle is the text written by the author and a stop and pray section – where you can write out your thoughts.

At the end, you’ll find fifteen pages as Food Pantry Tools. There’s Additional Food Pantry Ideas, Food Pantry Action Plan, Food Pantry Check-Off List, Food Pantry Contribution Sign-Up Sheet, Sample Postcard, Food Pantry Guidelines, and a Food Recipient Information Sheet. You can tear these pages out and photocopy them for use.

I’m confident that the author left nothing out in explaining the way to set everything up. You can really tell she’s passionate about what she does. Taking care of men, women, and children by offering them vital necessities must be so rewarding. Let’s show some kindness today and make sure that no one goes hungry in our community. How I captured and boarded the indomitable ship of publishing By MaryLu Tyndall

I’m currently writing my 11th novel. Wow! Did I say 11? That fact is still as shocking to me as the first time I got “that call” from my agent, telling me that I received a contract on my first novel. Every contract I’ve received after that has been just as exciting. God has been good to me. But, now that I’ve been in the business awhile, I often get asked, how did I get published? What is my advice for writers trying to capture that illusive ship of publishing?

If you’re a writer who’s been at it for quite some time, you’ve probably heard a multitude of answers such as: study the craft, join on online writers group, get in a critique group, attend conferences, enter contests, take classes, generate a platform...etc. So I won’t bore you with all of that again. I will say that all those things are good and valuable and are definitely things you should be doing as an aspiring writer. Having said that, however, I should tell you I did very few of those things before I got my first contract.

You see, if you’re a writer, you sort of know it deep down inside. You don’t write for money or fame or recognition. You write because you cannot do otherwise. It would be like telling an artist not to sculpt or paint or a chef not to cook. I wrote stories as far back as I can remember—way back in grade school. I was always creating adventures in my head and jotting them down here and there. God had made me a writer. I just didn’t know it yet! So, I wandered down the wrong path for many years until God, in His mercy, yanked me back to where I was supposed to be. I tell you all this by way of saying that you’re either a writer or you’re not. If you’re not, you will never achieve the success you’re looking for. You may even get a book published, but after awhile the business will become too hard and your ideas will dry out and you’ll give up. So, first thing, check in with the Creator and make sure you’re on the right path.

By the time I figured that out (slow leaner here), I didn’t know a thing about writing. But I heard quite clearly God telling me to write a story about a Christian Pirate. At first, I thought I was hearing things, but then I decided, what the heck? So I did. I had no prior professional writing experience, wasn’t on any loops, did not belong to a critique group, and had never attended a conference. I did, however, gather all the writing books around me I could and studied the craft of writing. Nevertheless, within three months of completing my first full length manuscript, I received a contract for it, plus three more books. To this day, many people tell me that first book of mine is their favorite. Lately, I’ve been pondering why, especially when I wrote that story with no plot, no preconceived set of rules, and no expectations of it being published. I wrote the story that was burning on my heart. The one that I had to tell or I would explode. And I had a blast doing it.

So what? You say. What does that mean to me? Well, I’ll tell you. After 11 books, I’ve really been trying to get back to the way I felt when I wrote that first novel. The combination of all the magical elements that made it not only get published but get nominated for a Christy award. And here’s what I remember I did:

1.    Study the craft. Learn all the rules. And then when you start writing, forget about them!
2.    Read read read. Read great literature and fiction in your spare time. As much as you can. Read Best sellers in your genre. You’d be surprised how much of a positive impact reading has on your writing
3.    Choose a story that makes you excited. That burns in your heart, yearning to be set free. If you don’t, your book will come out bland.
4.    Create deep and interesting characters with flaws and real goals, heartaches and needs.
5.    Don’t plot. Yes, you heard me. Just start with a situation, turn off your left brain, and go from there!

If you’re doing a romance, create a beginning situation for both hero and heroine. Such as in my first book, The Redemption, the situation for the heroine: Young noblewoman runs away from abusive uncle in England to the Caribbean in search of her long, lost father, hoping he will give her the love she’s never had.   Hero: Redeemed pirate turned privateer who sails Caribbean in search of a vile pirate, his arch-enemy, with the intent on capturing him and bringing him to justice, rescues maiden from deserted island only to find the father she is searching for is the same man.

So, now, you have a great situation filled with all kinds of possibilities and incredible tension. You’ve created deep characters. Now, just sit down, flex those fingers, and write. Turn on music, light candles, whatever gets you into your alternate world. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, historic details you need to look up later. Just mark them and move on. This is how I wrote The Redemption. If it worked for me, perhaps it will work for you too!

The Voice Leads Them: Book Review

On planet Monday, life is monotonous – gray is the color that invades the skies, uniforms, and the lives of every worker that calls it home. Mario is a worker, a farmer in fact. He is expected to wake up at a specific time, work the fields, eat, and then sleep. He repeats the exact same routine day by day. He can’t stray from normal protocols or let his emotions get out of hand. Mario must wear an emo-reader on his neck to discourage any feelings. If the reader rises up to 80%, transport tubes take him to be mindwiped and brought back never to remember anything. Such is the life on planet Monday.

Little does Mario know, his life is about to get brighter. His otherwise normal day is shaken up when he hears the Voice. Mario receives many Words spoken by the Voice. These mysterious Words bring him comfort, so he repeats them over and over again – until they’ve become ingrained in his memory. He also notices that they somehow keep the emo-reader from beeping. He cannot keep the Words to himself and so he shares them with his friend, Caitlin. She’s unsure of the whole thing but reluctantly starts saying them.

The Voice issues certain commands to Mario and Caitlin. They must escape from planet Monday and venture forth into the unknown. Mario trusts the Voice, so they both follow His plans. He and Caitlin will be guided to wherever they’re supposed to go, but where will the Voice take them and what will they find there?

My Thoughts on Legendary Space Pilgrims:

Legendary Space Pilgrims is my first sci-fi book that’s Christian themed. I am a fan of the genre, so I was interested in giving it a try. The tale follows Mario and Caitlin as they go on a journey from planet Monday to the wide frontiers of space. On this journey, they meet many challenges and temptations. It reminded me of Pilgrims Progress in the sense of it being an allegory.

While reading through the book, I hit a suggestive scene or two. This was the main reason why I gave it a lower rating. I did enjoy the visual treats of the strange worlds described by the author. It's fun to experience odd times and places. But the best part was probably the Voice that leads Mario and Caitlin. I love that He calls them forth to follow Him. When I reached the last chapters, I noticed the story wasn't wrapping up. That's because it continues into another book by the name of Independence Monday - not yet released.

Being introduced to a new genre is always exhilarating, and I honestly didn’t know there were Christian sci-fi books. Legendary Space Pilgrims may not have been my favorite, but I am definitely willing to read more of these.

Thank you for having me here!

It mentions on your site that you homeschool. How do you juggle being a teacher, writer, and a mother?

Juggle is the operative word… I take my jobs very seriously, and enjoy each aspect, and I’d have to say that they roll into one another quite nicely. Good thing I love spending time with our children! For school, I have a set schedule for each part of my day ~ we start every morning at the same time and they have a set time to complete their tasks or it’s homework. I take their education very seriously because one day they’ll walk out of our house, and I hope they’ll be prepared to succeed in whatever profession God leads them into. While the kids are doing their school work, I’ll be plotting my next situation, or reading a book that I need to review.

What books made your imagination soar when you were a child? And did you ever dream to write like those authors did?

I loved to read, but I can’t think of a particular book or series that spiked my imagination, although I do remember that they always had to have a happy ending. Even as a child, I knew life could be sad and hurtful, and I wanted to spend my time thinking on the positive. Actually, I would write books in my head. I guess it definitely helped having an active imagination.

I recently reviewed your debut novel: The Price of Trust. The characters were fun and entertaining. You must have loved creating them, but was it challengeing?

No, I didn’t find creating them as challenging. I like to write my characters to invoke a particular response – whether likable or not, but I don’t like painting the entire picture, so to speak. I wanted my readers to envision the people for themselves. I would actually miss them after I hadn’t written in a while. It was like they had become my personal friends. Odd, I know.

It would appear that you like suspense and romance intermingled together. How did you decide on these two genres out of the many others for The Price of Trust?

Personally, I don’t like a fluffy romance. All roses, all gaiety, all blah blah blah. (I was embarrassed a couple of times when I re-read my work at the fluffy stuff – I even blushed.) I love suspenseful books and I’m an incurable romantic, so the two just naturally combined.

How do you motivate yourself to keep at the writing process? Any tips or advice you’d like to make known?

Motivation isn’t my strong point. I used to write when it hit me, but I try to spend a few minutes everyday writing now. It’s virtually impossible to write when my husband is home as he desires my full attention! LOL! Now, I find that if I write down a list the things I need or want to accomplish on that particular day, that helps tremendously. I’ll even write the normal, everyday duties down, like making dinner. (Yes, I’ve forgotten to prepare dinner on more than one occasion…)

Do you have more books planned for further down the road? What are you currently working on right now?

Oh my yes! I’m super excited about my other books. I’m currently working on my fifth and sixth novels. I was working on my fifth, and one night while I was cooking, the sixth just popped in my head and it’s been gung-ho since. It literally took over! (Dinner was hopelessly burned, but I had a fantastic outline…)

There are many great Bible verses and quotes out there, but which of these apply to your journey in life?

My life verse:

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. – 3 John 4 (KJV) I want our children to love God and serve him their entire lives. If they do, that is my greatest accomplishment, and I will view my life as a success.

Randomly Fun Questions:

You’ve been given plane tickets to visit three countries. Which would they be? And why have you always wanted to see these?

Ireland – because there are so many redheads there! I won’t be in the minority! Scotland – because that’s where my family comes from, and finally, Venice, Italy – I’ve always wanted to ride in a gondola!

In your spare time, how often do you read? Every day I try to set aside time to read.

Have a favorite dessert you cannot resist eating? I am a cookie-aholic. If there is cookies in the house, they will NOT last long!

Suspense Filled: Book Review

The Price of Trust by Amanda Stephan.

Carly Richards is always running. She stays only so long in one location before her abusive ex-fiancé can find her again. However, on this juncture it’s different. Traveling by car, she makes her way to a modest little town in the state of Montana. She quickly sells the car and finds a job working at a hardware shop. The owners are kind-hearted and treat her like their own granddaughter.

Feeling somewhat comfortable, Carly finds herself glued to the small town. She decisively makes a bold choice to remain there. Carly visits the local church but tries desperately to remain detached from the community. Little does she know, God has other plans. Inevitably, the townspeople ease their way into her guarded heart.

Carly welcomes all the attention from new friends, but she’s still unsure of her predicament. Having the attention from a guy named Joe Baird confuses her. What if her ex-fiancé finds out? She can’t risk Joe getting hurt, so she avoids him at every turn. Will Carly be able to face her fears and trust God?

My Thoughts on The Price of Trust:

Amanda Stephan is a newly discovered author for me, and I recently acquired her debut novel. I must say The Price of Trust is a decent first start. What I like about Amanda’s writing is how much fun she had with her characters. You could tell she enjoyed creating them. They’re entertaining and not overly complicating. The romance between the two main characters, Carly and Joe, is beyond sweet. When an author has characters she cares about, it affects how you read the book. It doesn’t take long for them to tug at your heart.

Reading through the story, I was expecting non-stop action. Its progression is slower than I envisioned, but the suspense is killer! I was waiting on pins and needles for the ex-fiancé to finally appear. There is violence, as Carly reveals the abuse she suffered from him. It wasn’t an issue for me, as I’ve read far worse. In fact, it’s practically tame compared to other books.

I’m sure Amanda Stephan intends to publish additional books. If so, I will probably be waiting in line to read them. Like suspense and romance intermingled together? Pick up The Price of Trust!

March 19th of this year will be our 1st year blogoversary. Don't be surprised if I say that the 19th of March isn't when we started TCS. I'm thinking we began posting in February, but those interviews were from another blog (I don't really count them). The very first post was published on March 19th, so that will be our day for the blogoversary. Readers, whip out your pen and mark this date on your calendar!

I can't believe it'll already be a year. Wow! Time flies by so fast. We've come a long way and learned much from the realms of the book world. Following the Right Path: Book Review

A Path Less Traveled (A Miller's Creek Novel #2) by Cathy Bryant. 3 1/2 stars

Trish James is a hard worker, trying to support her son and herself in the small town of Miller’s Creek. After the loss of her husband, nothing has been the same. Her son is unhappy and distant with their situation. To help, Trish has him see a counselor, but nothing seems to awaken his heart.

Facing hardship, Trish tries to blaze a lonely path by trying to do things on her own. She avoids assistance from family members and friends. But when help comes in the form of a man named Andy, will Trish accept it - or will pride get in the way?

My Thoughts on A Path Less Traveled:

Trusting God and allowing others to help you through loss is the main subject of A Path Less Traveled. The author, Cathy Brant, does an excellent job of showing the pain and confusion that Trish experiences. I, as well as others, find it difficult at times to fully let go and trust God. You would think this would be easy to do, but often it proves hard. When it comes right down to it, we like to rely on ourselves. With that being said, I soaked up every smidgen of the lesson infused by Cathy Bryant. My only frustration was with how long it took for Trish to realize this. It felt like it dragged on a little.

Cathy Bryant is a wonderful writer, and I like the creative words she uses in her descriptions: “In spite of the thousands of winking lights surrounding Trish James, a wedding somehow lost its luster in the wake of death.” When reading her books, you’ll notice how artistically she creates her sentences.

If I were to compare this with Texas Roads, I would say I enjoyed the first one more. I can’t really say why, because I would be giving too much of the story away. I will mention that I didn’t understand the complicated family dynamics – which I hope I grasped correctly. That and one other issue kept me from giving this a higher rating. Despite being slightly disappointed in this, I am still highly anticipating Cathy Bryant’s next novel – The Way of Grace.

I recommend A Path Less Traveled to readers who like contemporary romance with a tinge of country charm to it.

Mary Beth Chapman: Choosing to See Book Review by Jay from Jay's Musik Blog. 4.5/5 stars

In Choosing to SEE, Mary Beth Chapman takes a look at the events of her life and dares to see how God has seen her through it all. As many know, on May 21st, 2008, Mary Beth and the Chapman family lost their five-year-old adopted daughter Maria when Will Chapman pulled into the driveway not seeing Maria running toward him. Through an interesting turn of events, God allowed the Chapman family to see that He was still holding them and taking care of both them and Maria. In Choosing to SEE, Maria Beth explores her life from beginning to the present, and how the hand of God has guided her through it all.

Mary Beth takes a look from the insecurities of her teenage years, to her problems in marriage, and much more. Through these major changes in life, Mary Beth shares how her fear slowly but surely was torn down through learning that God was always holding her hand. Also in Choosing to SEE, you will read the exciting accounts of Mary Beth's adoption processes, one of which was a spur-of-the-moment decision. Out of all the chapters and stories in the book, I think the adoption chapters were the main highlight of the book, seeing how something Mary Beth said she would never do came to pass. Also interesting accounts were the Chapman's house fire, and their children's weddings and graduations, as Mary Beth writes out a chronology of the Chapman family beginning from day one.

Mary Beth devotes the second half of Choosing to SEE to the terrible tragedy that plagued the Chapman family -- Maria Sue's death. Although hurt devoured all the members of the family, Mary Beth focuses on the healing of Will's hurt, as church, school, and family members reached out to him. I also enjoyed how Mary Beth shared the account of when both Will and Shaohannah learned how to let go of their hurt and embrace the future. These accounts make the book well worth the read!

However, one thing I disliked about Choosing to SEE was a few accounts that seemed rather unnecessary. I felt that a few sentences here and there actually took away from the extreme interest presented in the chapter. A few times, Mary Beth made reference to family matters that I personally found to be private. These features only appeared a few times through the book, so I probably would recommend parental guidance for children reading this book.

Mary Beth's Choosing to See is full of extremely interesting accounts of the Chapman's growth as a family, and their Christ-like examples of being unified. I very much enjoyed reading how the Chapman family bonded together after the accident and were one like never before. Mary Beth shares story after story of how God's hand guided their lives and led them to where they are now. Out of all their tragedy comes blessing -- a unified family, Maria's Big House of Hope, and healing for their hurting souls.

I believe that Choosing to See is a book that Steven Curtis Chapman fans will enjoy, seeing what life was like as Steven began his music career, and how his faith strengthened the Chapman family enabling them to be where they are today. Choosing to SEE is an excellent book showing how God speaks in ways that we often least expect it.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Cathy Bryant

Cathy Bryant is an author who loves to write and teach music at her farmhouse in East Texas. She has written two contemporary fiction books and her newest one (A Path Less Traveled) released in October of this year. She is currently working on her third book in this series - which will be released sometime in 2011.

Welcome, Cathy!

What authors (whether classic or not) stirred your deep passion to write? And can you tell us why they were such an impact?

When I sobbed through Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, I knew I would like to write stories that touched people with the truth of God. I’m still a long way from being able to write a story like that, but it’s my goal in every book I write.

What steps do you usually go through when it comes to writing and perfecting a story?

I spend several weeks doing what I call pre-writing. This involves brainstorming the theme and plot of the story, adjusting it to fit a three-act story structure, and getting to know my characters as well as possible. Then, using my pre-writing, I get the first draft down on paper. I leave the book for a while, then return to read through it several times, checking for a good balance between dialogue, sensory detail, internalizations, emotions, tension/conflict, and setting/description. I also check chapter beginnings and endings, the story timeline, word usage, plot details, and sentence structure, as well as how the story reads overall. Once I finish my final round of edits, I send the story to beta readers and editors for their feedback. It’s a very lengthy and mind-numbing process.

You now have two books written in the A Miller’s Creek Novel series - your newest one having been released in October. How would you compare Texas Roads to A Path Less Traveled?

Both stories are set in Miller’s Creek, Texas, and both stories involve a different member of the Miller family. The same cast is in both books. They both involve heroes and heroines who are struggling in some way, and also have spiritual themes entwined in the story.

In A Path Less Traveled, the story deals with loss and grief. What pushed you to pick this particular subject? And what part of this story do people need to soak up like a sponge and share with others?

All of our life experiences are different, but all of us will deal with loss and grief at some point in our journey through life. I don’t feel like I really chose this subject; it really chose me. I’ve recently come to realize that much of what we do is based on the traditions of men (for example, the “rule” that you should wait a year after a great loss before making major decisions). I hope that readers come to realize that all decisions in our lives should be based on one thing and one thing only—trusting God to direct our paths.

I would like to say that I admire the cover design of this book. It truly is beautiful. There must be a meaning behind the picture and the title. How does it relate to the story?

Thanks, Grace. I love the cover, too. It was designed by a talented young lady named Kellie Southerland. My husband and I made a trip to the Texas Hill Country in the spring of 2010 for the purpose of taking photos of the bluebonnets for this cover. I wanted a country path to show that following God IS the path less traveled. It’s often rocky and confusing, but the only way to true joy and peace. Taking that path means not following the traditions and expectations of men, but following the Shepherd of our souls. Since Trish is an artist in the story, I really wanted some reference to painting on the cover—hence the hand holding a paint brush. The font chosen for the word ‘Path’ in the title is an unlikely font for a book cover, but I liked the way the word ‘Path’ was disintegrating. That’s exactly how Trish felt—like her world was disintegrating and crumbling beneath her feet. The paint brush is near that disintegrating ‘Path,’ which came to symbolize to me how God paints our paths, even when it feels like the road we’re traveling is falling apart.

At the end of A Path Less Traveled, there’s a quick mention of your next book - The Way of Grace. Could you slip us and our readers a few tiny details describing it?

The analogy of journey continues in the third title in the Miller’s Creek novels—roads, path, way. This journey is about a young woman named Grace who thinks she understands God’s grace, until she is called upon to exhibit grace to someone who has used and abused her trust. It’s also a story of overcoming perfectionism and legalism. Through the course of the story Grace realizes she’ll never be perfect in her own strength, and any attempt to be perfect as a means of earning God’s favor is a waste of His grace.

I’m really curious… We all have a Bible verse and/or quote that we try to live by, so which one is yours?

There are so many passages that speak to me, but if I have to choose only one, I would choose the entire chapter of Romans 12. If I were to have to choose a shorter passage, I’d choose the first couple of verses. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Randomly Fun Questions:

If you could get into a time machine and visit any era, which one would it be?

LOVE this question! There are many time periods I’d love to visit—pioneer days in the United States, the 1940’s and 1950’s in America, the beginning of Creation, Israel during the days of King Solomon—but if I have to choose only one time period it would the time that Christ walked the earth, because all of time as we know it hinges on that event and it is the most significant spiritual act that has ever taken place.

Have any favorite quirky words? Lots! Bodacious, onomatopoeia, serendipity—to name a few!

I see that you like plants. What must you absolutely have growing in your garden?

Flowers! And it really doesn’t matter what kind because I love them all.

Christmas Break

I haven't been posting much.... Why? Well, it is almost Christmas. I've got baking to do (red velvet cupcakes - would love to send you some!). The Magic of Mistletoe: Book Review

Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe by Irene Brand and Anita Higman 3 1/2 stars

An Appalachian Christmas:

Julia Mayfield’s mission is to bring her young nephew to the small town of Mistletoe so he can stay with his grandparents. When the grandparents don’t exactly throw out the welcome mat, she has no choice but to stay with a motherly woman and her handsome son, David. Things don’t go exactly to plan for Julia. She has no idea how to take care of a little boy and she’s afraid that she’s falling in love. And most of all, she has to find a way to fulfill her dying sister’s wish, or she’ll wind up staying in Mistletoe forever – something that she’s sure won’t ever happen. Will God show Julia what’s missing in her heart?

Once Upon a Christmas Eve:

Holly Goodnight owns a quaint shop in the town of Noel, Missouri – where she sells everything and anything Christmas. Business is doing remarkably well for Holly and she receives a request for an interview on TV. This and being voted the best Christmas shop in America. With all that attention, comes a charming novelist by the name of Van Keaton – who wishes to write Holly’s story and… maybe steal her heart in the process. But what will Holly’s best friend, Owen Quigly, have to say about that?

My Thoughts on Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe:

My interests were piqued to read a book from the Love Finds You series, since I’ve seen them all over the internet in giveaways and reviews. I did eventually receive a copy. So, for the first time, I opened the cover of Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe and found two tender romance stories within. The two stories are not completely separate, but both interlocked through the magic of mistletoe.

The first story is An Appalachian Christmas by Irene Brand. It takes place in the Appalachian Mountains, which is aptly named “Mistletoe” - where mistletoe grows in abundance. The view on the characters and mountains of Mistletoe were probably the best part, because I love history. I find it intriguing the way people dealt with life after the Second World War, and how the people of the Appalachian Mountains lived during that day.

The second story is Once Upon A Christmas Eve by Anita Higman. It takes place in a cozy little town named Noel - pronounced like Joel .Unlike the first story, this is not set in post-war but in modern day. Because of its humor, I have to say that I enjoyed this more than An Appalachian Christmas. And believe it or not, this is tied to the first story. I won’t mention why… You’ll just have to pick up Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe and find out for yourself!

If my review enticed you to read this book before Christmas, make sure you do it with a cup of spiced apple cider or hot chocolate. I recommend it!

Hatteras Girl and Other Books I'll be Reading: Part 1

This is a list of books that I'll be reading (and reviewing) in the coming weeks and months ahead. One of my favorite authors is Alice J. Wisler, and I will be buying Hatteras Girl for my birthday. I can't wait to get this!!! AHH! Excuse my over eagerness, but I have been dying to read it! I am sure that my book-loving pals understand exactly how I feel ;)

Changes to the Pages

Does that rhyme?... Well, as you can tell from the title of this post, we've made changes to the pages on this blog. The about us page is the first one that we edited and added more info to. It describes what we do here and what our pages are for. This is also where the TCS Team wall is located.

The review policy page has been renamed to our policy. It no longer covers just reviews, but interviews, giveaways, and blog tours.

Minor details have been added to the what's ahead and contact info page. Did you notice what we're giving away in January? I am waiting in anticipation. I am not entering it of course, but I love classics and fantasy mixed together. I've often thought of giving a certain genre of books away each month. Could you guess what those would be? It should be easy ;)

The links page will eventually have more.... links! If yours isn't listed, be sure to tell me. I will add it.

This is not the end of changes that will be made to this blog. I have plans for many more. I might even do a complete makeover, but that will be saved for later in the coming year.

The Shadowed Mind by Julie Cave

In this second installment of A Dinah Harris Mystery series, we meet Dinah on another one of her baffling cases. She’s hot on the tracks of a serial killer, but instead of working with her prior partner (David Ferguson), Dinah is saddled with a new one by the name of Samson Cage.

Dinah and Samson make for interesting partners. Dinah is abrasive and Samson is reserved. Even though different, they both work well together. Their first crime scene investigation begins in a dark alleyway. The victim has had no visible trauma, and there’s no evidence of a struggle. They search for any clues that the killer might have left behind. The investigators are stumped when they find a printed sympathy card and an old photograph. Not left with much to go on, they wait for the killer to make his next move.

Everything in Dinah’s life has had a complete turn-around. She’s a born-again Christian with a new outlook on life. She’s also getting help with battling her drinking problem. But will this case prove to be too much for her? And will she lean on old habits?

My Thoughts on The Shadowed Mind:

In my opinion, The Shadowed Mind by Julie Cave is better than Deadly Disclosures. It has a serious tone that tackles the tough subject of eugenics. It’s not a light read and nor is it filled with any romance. I didn’t enjoy following the murderer while he befriended people. But, I like all the information that I got from the history of eugenics. This is really something that people need to be aware of in this country. I already knew about it, but this book opened my eyes to the full extent.

I was stunned by the facts on what I learned in this book. I can’t believe what our country did in the past with involuntary sterilizations. Unfortunately, this belief of who is and isn’t “fit to live” is going on now.

After finishing it all, I am very glad that I read it. It’s important to be informed on these sorts of things. It’s… a nice change instead of always burying yourself in a romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading romances! I would also like to note that I like how the character of Dinah is not perfect. She’s got issues just like everyone else. A unique read!

I recommend this book to both men and women who love crime/detective themed stories. Be sure to pick up the first book (Deadly Disclosures) in this series!

Blessed Beyond Measure (Devotional Journal) by Gloria Copeland // 4 stars

My Thoughts on Blessed Beyond Measure:

This is the devotional journal of Blessed Beyond Measure by Gloria Copeland. Just so that there’s no confusion, this isn’t the actual book of Blessed Beyond Measure. I haven’t read that, but I have completed two days worth of devotionals from this. It would take me far too long (forty-five days to be exact) to finish this book and then write a review for it.

I don’t want to push myself and hurry up the process of doing all the devotionals, I want to take my time and enjoy each and every one (as it is meant to be). From what I’ve looked over, it’s going to be a great devotional. Plus side is that it’s also a journal. I love to have journals and this is perfect! Each page begins with a brief devotional. After that, there are three areas to write in: Reflection on His Goodness, Experiencing His Goodness, and Praying in His Goodness.

I’ve already gained some wonderful insight from doing two days of it. If you’re like me, I like to write out my thoughts and feelings. I learn quite a bit when I do it that way. I recommend this to women for two reasons: if you have a desire/hunger to learn of God’s goodness, and if you have a fondness for devotionals that also double as a journal. I look forward to the process of reading through Blessed Beyond Measure!

I would like to say that I really enjoyed reading your new book Surrender the Heart. And thank you so much for sending me a copy! (Read my review of it here)

I especially enjoyed the history surrounding this story. What made you decide to write on the War of 1812?

When I started doing research on the war, I instantly became fascinated with it! It’s a really exciting time period that I don’t think most people know very much about. At least I didn’t learn about it in school. It’s the ultimate adventure story. You have the big bad bullies, the British, who are intent on squashing the underdogs, the fledgling newly formed Americans. By all accounts, Britain should have won! They had a massive well trained army and the largest most powerful navy in the world. Only by God’s mighty hand did America defeat them.

I am always amazed at how well you describe the ships and how each one of them works. What was the process like for the research that you put into this?

The process is very time consuming and tedious! LOL. But I believe that injecting accurate details into the story make it more authentic and ground the reader in the time and place which makes the whole experience more worthwhile! Anyway, I have several large books on sailing and sailing ships that I reference quite often. I keep them close to my writing desk and whenever I need a detail I have them available. The problem is that it often will take me hours of reading to find that one detail!!

I also have toured several tall ships just to get the feel for the setting and the smells and sights. The HMS Rose in San Diego was my favorite. That’s the ship they used in the film, Master and Commander, one of my favorite movies.

Surrender the Heart

I found the characters to be well-developed and very likable in Surrender the Heart. Which of them was your favorite and why?

Marianne, the heroine. I just love her. She’s just your typical everyday woman, like we all are. There’s nothing extraordinary about her. She’s not a raving beauty. She’s a bit chubby. LOL. She has not particular talents and she harbors terrible fears. I loved writing her story and have her come to the realization that no one is ordinary in God’s eyes. And that God could use her to do awesome and important things if she would just surrender to Him!

This is the first book in a brand new series you’ve started. Why the title Surrender to Destiny?

The entire series revolves around the theme of finding God’s destiny for your life. I truly believe that we are all here on earth at this time and place for a reason. Just like Esther in the book of Esther, we are put here for a certain purpose. It saddens me to realize that most people never find that purpose. They wander around life unfulfilled and bored and wonder why. So, I wanted to show through these stories that God’s purpose for each of us is real, perfect, and pleasing and that all we need to do is surrender to Him and trust in Him and He will reveal it to us.

Surrender the Night

The second installment in this series is Surrender the Night – which comes out in March of 2011. Would it be possible to share a short preview of it with us?

Here’s a paragraph summary:

The only way Cassandra Channing can provide for her younger siblings is to hire a privateer, captained by the rogue, Luke Heaton. Anxious to redeem his reputation and help Cassandra, Luke works hard and brings home much wealth for her family. A Very Private Grave by Donna Fletcher Crow

In A Very Private Grave, the first book of The Monastery Murders, a young American, Felicity Howard, is studying to become a priest at the College of the Transfiguration in Yorkshire. Her beloved friend, Fr. Dominic, is brutally bludgeoned to death, plunging Felicity into devastation. However, shortly before Fr. Dominic is murdered, he stops in to see Felicity and gives her a gift, which she thinks is a book of his poems.

Felicity’s church history lecturer, Fr. Antony, is found with Fr. Dominic’s blood dripping from his hands, highly incriminating him. For the time being, the police let him go.

Later, while Fr. Antony and Felicity are going over the ‘gift book,’ which is actually Fr. Dominic’s itinerary of his last pilgrimage, they are interrupted and told to flee, as the police are looking to arrest him. They are thrust into a search to find the treasure Fr. Dominic alludes to, eluding the police, and trying to find the murderer(s).

I loved the way Donna mixed the narrative style of writing into her storyline, delineating the ancient history of the church through Fr. Antony, who is literally a ‘walking history book.’ She intertwines murder, stalking, ancient historical puzzles, romance, and the search to find the murderer(s) and clues, which keeps you as intrigued, frustrated and frazzled as her characters, wondering how the puzzle pieces fit together. The number of possible suspects keeps growing as the pages fly by! She definitely has you wondering who had the motive and opportunity to bludgeon Fr. Dominic, and why. It ended too abruptly for me, as I was expecting to read more about the main characters.

There are a couple things I did not like, such as insinuating that St. Cuthbert was the ‘Holy One who would not see corruption,’ as that pertains to Jesus Christ in the Scriptures, and some of the ancient history bogged me down, but it was necessary to work out the plot.

That said, I wouldn’t hesitate to read any additional books she writes in The Monastery Murders series!

Completes The Circle: Book Review

Note of advice: I usually write more on a book in my reviews. This time, however, was different. It was nearly impossible for me to keep from revealing at least something about what happens in Green. Because of this, there are a few “spoilers”, I guess. Read on, but with caution.

In Green, Thomas faces his biggest challenge yet. His son, Samuel, grows restless. He behaves rebelliously and speaks of war against the Horde – which is the opposite of what Elyon wants them to do. Thomas knows that it’s hard for his people. The days have become darker and hope has waned. They’re all looking for a word or sign from Elyon. They’ve grown weary of running and hiding. And Samuel feels that fighting is the only answer to their situation.

While Thomas discovers what to do in his world, Kara and Monique talk with a man named Billy. He’s strangely odd, and both of the women are wary of him. He somehow knows of Thomas’ blood and asks for it. Kara and Monique have no intention of giving it to him. So he receives the help he requires from Monique’s twisted daughter, Janae. There’s a huge attraction between Billy and Janae. And they both feel drawn to… something outside of their world.

Will Samuel start a war against the Horde and bring death on his people? Or was it meant to be this way in some strange twist of fate?

My Thoughts on Green:

Green is the beginning and the end - or rather the end and the beginning. No matter how you look at it, this book completes the circle. It takes all the missing pieces from Black (the first book) and puts them in their place. Ted Dekker explains all, tells all in Green.

While the book is the beginning and the end of the circle series - it doesn’t really have an ending. Yes, it literally is a circle. I wanted more of a resolution to the series, and I felt that I didn’t get it from this.

I would recommend reading Black, Red, and White before reading Green. I remember reading somewhere that it could be read before Black. I disagree. A reader might become confused when they find that they’re reading the end and a short intro into the first book. I believe it’s all the better and more mysterious if you leave Green at the end to read.

Green is my least favorite of the three. I would like to note that there’s more violence and blood. Make that lots and lots of blood! No, I’m not squeamish. There’s blood-sucking vampire/shataiki people (won’t say exactly who they are) who enjoy licking up any blood that they can find. It all just seemed a little ridiculous to me.

I am glad that I read this book. It was a relief to finish the series, and I only really recommend it for that reason.

Never Giving Up: Book Review

The Carousel Painter by Judith Miller

In the book’s opening, we’re transported to Colinsford, Ohio in 1890. There we follow the main character of Carrington (also known as Carrie) Brouwer. She has come to America to find a place to live and a job. Her father has just recently died in France, and she has no living relatives to assist her. So she reaches out to her wealthy friend, Augusta – who was one of her father’s students.

Carrie arrives in America with an uncertain future and a crate full of paintings from her father. She tries to get comfortable with living at Augusta’s home, but it proves to be uncomfortable and difficult. She’s sure that the mother is not happy with her stay, and she feels the pressure to move out. What Carrie desires most of all, is to find a job and a place to call hers – no matter how small.

Her big chance comes when Augusta’s father mentions that his carousel factory needs a painter. Carrie sees the opportunity and jumps on it. She mentions that she’s a painter and that she’s sure she’ll be right for the position. Everyone is skeptical about Carrie taking it except for Augusta’s mother – who is eager to get Carrie out of her home.

She takes the job and meets opposition. After all, she’s a woman. What is she doing in a factory with only men? Carrie fights to keep her dream alive of being an artist and keeps pressing on. Is being a carousel painter all that she desires or will something else stir her heart?

My Thoughts on The Carousel Painter:

This is told in first-person from the viewpoint of Carrington Brouwer. I admittedly have not read many books written from this angle. What I have read is Rain Song and How Sweet It Is by Alice J. Wisler. Unlike these, this is not set in a modern time frame. It takes place in 1890.

The characters are all interesting and well-developed. I enjoyed seeing each and every one of them through the eyes of Carrie. I especially liked the love interest in this – he’s not the same sort of guy you always read about. He’s shorter and has a slight German accent (he says “ja” quite a bit).

I swept through the pages easily. It’s a light read – judged not by how long or short it is, but by how smoothly it flows. The Carousel Painter is a fun book to add to your fiction collection. It would make for a great gift (Christmas is coming *hint). I really look forward to reading more of Judith Miller’s works. Keep up the great writing, Judith!

Marianne Denton and her family give off the illusion of being wealthy when they are only barely scraping by. Marianne’s mother is terribly ill, and she requires expensive medicines. The only way to get them is to enter into marriage with the right man. And that man is Noah Brennin. But Marianne is presented with two major problems: she can’t stand him, and she could never reveal the reason for marrying. If everything goes to plan, her dowry will not be going to him but to her mother.

Noah Brennin is a merchant who trades with the British. He hopes to build up his business and strike it rich with shipping and trading goods. He’s not doing it so much for the money, but to make his family proud - especially his father. And he’s to marry Miss Marianne Denton or “Princess” as he likes to call her. He remembers her as a snob and not someone that he would ever wish to marry. He’s only doing it for her nice dowry.

One of them will come to terms with a painful past while the other learns to trust. In the early stages of the War of 1812, both will be greatly challenged. Will they be able to let go of their broken hearts and find God’s love? This is the only love that can set them free. And will they, in turn, love each other?

My Thoughts on Surrender the Heart:

I really like this book (hence the four stars) by MaryLu Tyndall. It’s a good beginning for her new series: Surrender to Destiny.

I noticed differences from this and MaryLu’s other books. They aren’t major or anything – just little subtle changes. I kind of like them, actually. I, honestly, didn’t think there was as much romance in this compared to her others. There’s also little mention of pirates. Granted, there are a few privateers and maybe one or two former pirates. But that’s pretty much it.

With the story, I loved the facts on the history of our nation. MaryLu did her research on this one. She paints so clearly the struggles and pain of working on a ship during war. I cannot believe how hard the British ran their men. It was a tough life, and I’m glad that the author was able to give me a glimpse into that.

I don’t really like to reveal too much about a book in a review, but the message behind this is awesome. If you’re dealing with trust issues or insecurity, then you’ll gain something from reading this. I guarantee you’ll like it.

The next book in this series is Surrender the Night - which will be released in March of 2011. I’m eagerly awaiting it!

Book Review "The Hiding Place"

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom with Elizabeth and John Sherrill.

Have you ever needed a re-focus or a change of perspective? A glimpse into this sweet woman's life will most certainly help.

When I sat down and opened the first page, I was greeted by a family. The Hiding Place is more than a story of persecution, it is a sharing in the life of community and family. This woman's whole life was dedicated to people, both in her community and around the world. She served her family, friends, neighbors, and even her enemies, all to the glory of God. This is her eye witness account of God's power, strength, and shelter. The reality that even in the midst of a dreadful extermination camp, He is our hiding place.

I don't recommend this book to anyone who is sensitive to graphic descriptions, because you'll walk through prison, a concentration camp, and an extermination camp. You'll also walk through death and life with her as she suffers great loss and devistations, but also learns the richness of God's grace.

An Oak Tree Late in Winter is a biography following the life of musician Josh Rosenthal. As you start to open it, you will see to whom this book is dedicated: “This is for the cowboys out there.” Why, you ask? When Josh was young, he had a fascination with cowboys and the aura of being a loner. Like a man who wandered the plains alone – seeking solitude. This is pretty self explanatory. From this, we continue on - reading about Josh’s childhood dreams and struggles.

We watch him grow into a teenager, the hardest time in anyone’s life - but often the most crucial. Josh’s scores in school aren’t entirely the best and on top of that, he soon finds himself moving away from home. When he moves, he finds a very different place than his prior home. The styles are unfamiliar; there’s a desert, and he’s alone. No friends. So he decides to do something with his time and pick up a hobby of cross-stitching (this is hilarious) “My dad started to worry about me, justifiably. So, he bought me a guitar.” This is how it all began for Josh Rosenthal.

My Thoughts on An Oak Tree Late in Winter:

Being a designer, the first thing that strikes me is the book cover. Whoever created it did an excellent job. I would definitely say that it is unique.

Okay, let’s get to the writing angle of this. I enjoyed reading and following the life of Josh Rosenthal (I have no inkling as to what type of music he plays, perhaps country?). I find it awesome in fact; I’ve never actually read a biography by a Christian musician. It was intriguing, learning how one becomes a musician. At times, I did relate a little with the author. Not having anything to do with music, but dealing with insecurity, I guess. It’s nice when you’re reminded that you’re not alone in feeling like this. There are countless others who deal with it everyday but are afraid to be honest about it. It does indeed feel good to get it out there. Who knows? You might just inspire someone.

There are a few things to note from this book: I wasn’t expecting to find the couple of curse words thrown in every once in a while. Honestly, it did pull down the rating for me. I just don’t think there’s a reason for it. But then, that’s me. A cool factor – each chapter is a lyric. It wasn’t until I looked at it carefully, though, that I realized it said “chapter.” Silly me!

At the end of this review, I can say it’s a good three-and-a-half-star book - which old and new fans of Josh Rosenthal will both like. And I am now curious to hear his music…

Changes Ahead!

This blog will be put through many changes in the months ahead - that is, if it continues to do well. Starting now, there has already been a few updates. The Contact Info page has had text added to it (not that that exciting, I know). The About Us page is modified but not finished. We'll add more to that this week. We're also trying to decide if we should remove the author links (on the Links page), since there's way too many to list. We'll still keep this page, but we'll probably lose that part of it. The Blog Awards page (which has been removed for now) will be become something else. C'mon there's only one award, anyways! We'll just insert the award neatly into our sidebar. Haven't decided what exactly will replace it, but we're open for suggestions!

The banner at the bottom of this page is a little outdated - will change! With regards to the sidebar, there will maybe be a couple of new images/buttons/widgets. Even the main banner will get a new makeover!

What we're looking forward to is when the blog will have its own look. I mean, a complete face-lift! But ,of course, this will only happen if the blog does awesome and there's a need to do this.

We can't do it on our own, bookworms! You can help get more people interested in what we do by tweeting and facebooking (or whatever else works for you). We greatly appreciate the help that some of you are already doing to help us grow. Bless you!

Grace Westcott: Book Review for The Raven Saint

Grace Westcott is a young woman devoted to helping the poor and serving God. When she and her servant go to help a family with a sick little boy, she finds herself in great peril. A mercenary and a few of his men ambush and kidnap her. Because of her kindness, she was tricked by her servant to help a family whose son wasn’t ill.

Grace is taken aboard Le Champion by the mercenary Captain Rafe Dubois - a Frenchman. The captain takes Grace to her cabin and leaves her there in the care of Father Alers. Grace learns the reason for her kidnapping; she is to be sold to a Spanish Don in Colombia. She pleads with the Captain to let her go, but he won’t.

She’s determined that one of the reasons that God allowed this to happen was so that she could lead someone to Christ. She gives warnings to the captain and his men, but they all seem to fall on deaf ears. She becomes distraught and confused – praying constantly through her struggles. She’s afraid of what might happen in her future and of her growing feelings for the captain. Will she find the true meaning of why she’s aboard a mercenary’s ship?

My Thoughts on The Raven Saint:

A couple of random things come to mind when I think of this book: romantic, ever-changing, and adventurous.

In comparison with the other two books in the Charles Towne Belles series, I would say this is the best one. The characters of Grace and Rafe were perfect; the chemistry between them was well sewn together. I was satisfied with the ending of this series, but I longed to read more about the two main characters (the only drawback).

I don’t want to reveal what Grace learns from her journey (let’s keep that a secret), but I will say… it wasn’t what she was expecting. God makes a change through her - as well as the others around her. He took what she thought was a bad situation and turned it into good. Overall, it has a wonderful message that will make you think differently about others.

I’ve read most of MaryLu’s books, and this is either my first or second favorite. I really feel conflicted about this. It’s between this and The Falcon and The Sparrow. I truly think this could be my favorite, though.

If you like scalawag pirates, a story laced with romance and an adventure on the high seas – grab this book! You won’t be disappointed.

In case you didn't know, The Christian Scroll is on Facebook. Yes, we have a page for all of our book-loving fans out there! All bookworms are welcomed, but we only post Christian themed books - preferably fiction and Christian living. That doesn't mean that we don't stretch out into other genres. No, we also do Children's books, cookbooks, and anything else that has a Christian theme in it.

On our fan page, we provide albums with new book releases of fiction and non-fiction. So, you the reader will know what to look forward to in the months to come. It's just a great way to be in the know of when books are releasing.

Walking With God - What an adventure!

This book is a detailed journey with Joshua as he led the Israelites into possessing the Promised Land. It is an eleven week study beginning with God's promises and ending with their blessed fulfillment.

Mindy Ferguson certainly does her homework when it comes to teaching God's Word. Throughout the book, she points out how much God was involved in leading the Israelites, and how involved He is in leading His children through their every day lives. She even takes us through a Spiritual Boot Camp, so to speak, as a two-week break mid way to help readers secure their faith and be certain how they can protect themselves in the coming battles. For me, at the end of each day's study there was a longing for more of God's word and His working in my life. Mindy covered all the basics of how to live a life in God's promises: Trust God, obey Him, and have faith that He is both true to His word and faithful.

The Word goes deeper when Mindy gives the reader insight into the original translations of many words, making it easier to understand the real meat behind the truth. She makes things plain. Nothing is sugar coated. It is simply the truth. The reader is asked many heart wrenching, soul-searching questions--the kinds that only bring out the truth we often hide from. So many times, as I went through this study, I felt like we were having a discussion over tea about God's Word and how it can be more deeply rooted in my own life. It is rich in application, and filled with encouragement for everyone longing to dig deeper in her walk with God.

The five studies per week usually took me between 15 and 20 minutes each day, and God's Word came alive. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves the Lord and wants to know Him in a more intimate and personal way. The study is geared toward women, but I am confident that any man could glean from the thought provoking questions and discussions provided in this study of the book of Joshua.

Thank you so very much, Mindy, for being obedient to God's call in your life. I am a soul blessed by yours. If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask you a few questions.

How did you come to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and how does He continue to impact your life today?

When your life isn’t working, you know it. At the age of twenty-six my marriage was falling apart, I was drinking heavily, and I was struggling to be a good mommy for my son who was eighteen months old at the time. Desperate for change, I got down on my knees before God and asked Him to help me and show me the purpose for which I was created. Just a few weeks later, my husband, Mark, and I were invited to a conference with a church service on the agenda. We responded to the invitation and both made Jesus the Lord of our lives that day.

Jesus has transformed, and continues to transform, every area of my life. Mark and I have now been married twenty-three years. We are happy and both are serving Christ. We now have two incredible children - our son is in college and our daughter is in high school. We haven’t been perfect parents, but God has guided for us and provided for us as we’ve raised our children. I lean on God daily and trust Him to keep redeeming my mistakes, transforming my weaknesses, and working in me to make me more like Jesus.

How did God lead you into this opportunity to encourage and empower women through His Word?

God used His Word to transform my life. I have been a joyfully diligent Bible student ever since the morning that I accepted Jesus as my Savior. I’ve always been excited to share what God teaches me through His Word. After a health challenge in 1999, I sensed God prompting me to write down the lessons He was teaching me. Those lessons became the Bible study, Walking with God: From Slavery to Freedom; Living the Promised Life.

After teaching the study at the church we were attending at that time, other churches began to ask me to come and teach it. I eventually added weekly lectures to the written lessons. It was a gradual progression in ministry. God eventually nudged me into speaking at retreats and conferences. Today I enjoy serving Him through writing and speaking regularly. Every day is an adventure and I’m thoroughly enjoying the journey.

How has this ministry changed and challenged you in your faith?

I consider serving God in full-time ministry an incredible privilege and tremendous responsibility. Because of my past mistakes, I’ve often felt unworthy. I’m an introvert by nature, so being up front in a speaking role was not something I felt comfortable with or aspired to do. But I leaned on God and allowed Him stretch and mold me all along the way. I’m still growing and stretching, but I’ve learned to be adventurously expectant when God calls me to serve Him, whatever that entails. It’s my experience that when God calls us, He equips and empowers us to do and be far more than we could ever do or be on our own. I’ve been changed and challenged every step of the way and I take confidence in this, that he who began a good work in [me] will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6). And He will do the same for you!

What brought out your desire to write your latest book? The Women in Jesus’ Life?

I taught an evening women’s Bible class for about seven years. Most of the women worked and I noticed that they often struggled to finish their homework when we did in-depth Bible studies that required a lot of Bible reading and questions. I also noticed that the majority of the women felt like they couldn’t measure up to all of the expectations or meet the many needs of their families, employers, and friends. It was clear to me that a study with a lighter amount of homework that emphasized the depth of Jesus’ love for them was needed. As I prayed about that need, my attention was drawn to the compassionate and loving way Jesus treated the women He encountered during His life and ministry. Inspired, I wrote The Women in Jesus’ Life for the women in my class. I found the lessons generated rich, open discussion. Women came to class each week feeling affirmed and encouraged, anxious to share how they related to the women they had studied during the week. It was a special time with a special group of women.

How was writing this book different from writing your first in-depth Bible study?

Walking with God took me 11 months to write and the research was extensive. I wrote with a friend reading my lessons, providing feedback. It wasn’t until the study was completed that I began to teach it.

The Women in Jesus’ Life was written in six weeks. I wrote the lessons each week and handed them out to my women’s class as I wrote. I still researched the culture and spent a lot of time with my face in commentaries, but the emphasis for The Women in Jesus’ Life is application and encouragement.

Both studies engage the mind and also stir the heart. They both help women dig in God’s Word for themselves. Both studies enable participants to grow in their knowledge of God’s Word and their intimacy with Christ.

Participants in the Walking with God Bible study will gain knowledge of both Old Testament and New Testament principles and gain a better understanding of God’s divine plan for the salvation of His people. Those who do The Women in Jesus’ Life will gain a greater understanding of the compassionate and merciful nature of our Savior.

What Scripture verse or passage have you found your greatest encouragement and strength through?

Wow, it’s difficult to only list one verse because I gain encouragement from many, but if I have to list one passage, I would say,

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9 NIV).

Can we expect to see more books from you in the near future?

I’ve written another in-depth Bible study on the Apostle Peter that is not yet published. We’ll see what God has planned for that material. I am also working on a book, similar to Hugs Bible Reflections for Women, which I was fortunate enough to have published by Simon & Schuster last year. I’ll be talking to a publisher about that project later this year.

Book Review "Trusting For Tomorrow"

Katherine Douglas and her two daughters, Amber and Alyssa, have tragically lost their husband and father in a horrific accident. They had settled in a home built by her late husband, Leyton, in Jupiter, Florida, trying to find joy and peace as they moved on in life.

Dr. Michael Manning has raised his two boys, Jack and Simon, from early on, as they, too, tragically lost a wife and mother. He is a pediatrician who has relocated to Jupiter to be close to his parents for support and stability for his family.

Katherine and Michael develop a friendship through their children's interactions and their common faith. When Alyssa, Katherine's youngest daughter, continually gets sick after eating, Katherine takes her to Dr. Manning to see if he could shed some new light on the issue. His diagnosis seems trite and even rude, so she seeks a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist, to no avail. Their friendship suffers with his insolent remarks.

I so enjoyed Jennifer's book, Trusting for Tomorrow, as the whole story really touched my heart with the tragedies, heartbreak, and grieving both Katherine and Michael have suffered. She shows Katherine's determination to cocoon herself from any future relationships again, while showing Michael's tender vulnerability and determination to pursue a new relationship, one that contrasts deeply with Katherine's. Their lives seem to mesh together through friendship, which almost seems ordained by God.

Jennifer has Alyssa'a illness take center stage, as it should, as she was getting more ill as the days passed. She genuinely displays how Katherine's motherly instincts and tenacity show through like a mother bear whose cubs appear to be in danger, especially when Dr. Manning dismisses her concerns. Once correctly diagnosed, Dr. Manning's responses about Alyssa's illness shock me. What was his problem? Would he take the time to press into God and find His will?

The ebb and flow of their conversations were so real and genuine, at times heart-breaking, yet with a glimmer of hope. The laughter and innocence of their children's camaraderie is highly contagious. Would Katherine and Michael open their eyes to let God show them what needs to change in their lives?

I thoroughly enjoyed Jennifer's book for its delicate handling of a new relationship and learning about a common illness that rarely gets diagnosed. In its own way, it was so refreshing. I definitely think you'll find the book tugging at your heart-strings.

On Vacation... Well, sort of.

I apologize for not posting much. This month, my sister and her family are coming to stay (they'll be here in five days!), and I want to spend as much time with them as possible. So because of this, I won't be on that often. I might post something here and there... Oh! I will make sure to announce the winners for the contest and book giveaway that's running.
